I read your post and really like how you set up the students to really get to know the content of the curriculum as well as the achievement chart. Can I ask what those 5 goals you ended up writing with your students look like? I teach middle school so we have double (or more) the number of specific expectations as high school. The map they are using to evaluate on is not what I would call a rubric - it has a similar look, of course, but it is designed to be a progression of learning (hence, map). I don't know how student's would be able to determine what other levels were without some guidelines. My 9s were done more in the way you describe and it was not concrete enough even for me, never mind them. The other advantage to the map is that it would have max 5 goals. So it can help the course feel more manageable. Will keep working on this process and sharing updates as they happen!Heather Lyehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01050951042072276947noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4700599384749105609.post-41355211426667429722017-11-25T09:05:27.324-05:002017-11-25T09:05:27.324-05:00I've found the time conferring goes smoother a...I've found the time conferring goes smoother as the year goes on. Have you considered a single point rubric for criteria...with just ministry standard criteria rather than a full rubric? I have student give a level based on the L3 criteria. How did student's self assessments compare to your assessment? Curious...i have about 80% agreeing with me, 5% giving themselves lower scores, and the rest higher scores. Some who want higher scores are willing to work for them, others defer to my judgement. My journey is here: http://www.livebinders.com/play/play/1693716?tabid=d7ca22f1-24ec-6f05-1c4e-9c0f303b0649

I'm done just accepting things that are not right for our kids. I heard Matt Miller speak yesterday - he said changing education is like trying to re-route a barge. HOWEVER - we can change our own classrooms, because we are jet skis! ;) (Then my principal supported me by calling me a jet ski, which I think totally fits with my name...) It's time. Do it. You've got support from your PLN, and when you take the time to explain reasons why to your administration and team, you'll have their support as well. Actually it is more of the light. I live that the students did most of the investigations and you facilitated the learning. They work collaboratively and most likely learned more then watch PowerPoint.

Was wondering a couple of things (which may or may not work in High School).

1) is it possible to open it up even more. For me I like to start with a big question/ problem to solve in my unit. Is there a real world problem in biology that they kids can demonstrate their learning? (Sorry my knowledge of biology is limited)

I wonder this because I see a lot of similarities in your days just wondering if some of these skills can be put together. I also recently read the best way to test knowledge is to have students use it in a different setting.

2) if this is not possible was thinking: have students do a collaborative slide presentation, review movie, or something to get the content down and then move into a project.

Basically following your flip model have them do the research for it all create something interactive to showcase what they learned as a group for the class and then have them demonstrate that learning with a big project. This is where google or our one drive comes in handy.

Again I really love that in High School are doing this as it shows me it works in all levels of Education. Also think that it is the way of our students need to go in order to survive the future.
